Cover picture in Macromolecular Rapid Communications Journal’s special issue in honour of 200 years of Karlsruhe Institute Technology (KIT). The front cover illustrates the tunable swelling and post extrusion behaviour of Carbopol-PEO blends during 3D printing. Great work Ases!
The LINXS YRI Soft Matter December Meeting brought together early-career researchers at The Loop for a day of science and networking. Marko presented his work, Ases and Kesevan contributed with posters, and Roland participated in the career panel.
The winner of the Materials for Tomorrow Photo Competition is A Heart of Thorns by Ases - proof that materials science can be both sharp and beautiful. Congrats Ases!
Roland presented our research at the LINXS Inaugural Conference at Science Village, Lund. The event marked the official opening of the new LINXS premises in The Loop, bringing together international researchers, infrastructure leaders, and Nobel Laureates to shape the scientific future around ESS and MAX IV.
The Nordic Rheology Conference took place in Berlin, Germany, for the first time co-organized with the German Rheological Society. Roland and Ases represented our group and enjoyed a great program packed with fun rheology.
We attended the WWSC International Conference 2025 in Stockholm, Sweden. Kesavan, Roland, and Kim (MAX IV) were there representing our team, contributing with: Influence of nanocellulose and hybrid morphologies on Taylor–Couette instabilities, Advanced rheological testing: a science initiative at MAX IV, and Combining Small- and Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering with Dynamic Mechanical Analysis to Study Moisture-Driven Material Behavior.
Kesavan successfully presented his licentiate seminar titled ‘Multiscale Characterization of Hierarchical Nanostructured Fluid Flows.’ He shared some great visuals showing how materials behave under flow, giving insight into their complex structures across different scales. Congratulations to Kesavan!

We wrapped up RheoMAXESS workshop, focusing on rheological infrastructure at MAX IV. The session gave an in-depth look at what’s available and what future users should keep in mind when applying for beamtime — from planning ahead to arriving well-prepared. We had fruitful discussions throughout the day. Presentations were given by Marko Bek, Roland Kádár, and Ann Terry. Stay tuned for future events at LINXS.
Congratulations to Dr. Sajjad! We’re delighted to announce that our colleague Sajjad has successfully defended his PhD thesis on “Highly Filled Biocomposites Modeling, Processing, and Characterization”.
Our group recently packed their bags (and a poster) and headed to the Annual European Rheology Conference (AERC 2025) in Lyon. We had strong participation across several sessions — and even managed to turn a small technical hiccup into an impromptu private screening (thanks to our very supportive group members)! It was a great few days of sharing our research, connecting with the rheology community, and getting inspired by new ideas.
Kesavan and Marko attended the WWSC Winter Workshop 2025 and presented their posters, and Marko was awarded a best presentation prize. Read more here.
We’ve officially kicked off the RheoMAXESS theme — Advanced Rheometry for Neutron and X-ray Science — at LINXS in Lund! Our aim is to build a strong research community around ESS and MAX IV, connecting structure and flow through cutting-edge scattering and rheology techniques. The kickoff brought together researchers from academia, industry, and large-scale facilities to launch a collaborative effort in materials innovation for energy, sustainability, and biomedical applications. Our MSc student Manoj Chandregowda successfully presented his thesis 3D Printing of Soft Matter in our lab. Congratulations to Manoj on completing this important milestone and for a great discussion!
2024
Congratulations to Matheus for presenting his PhD research on Electrically Conductive Nano-Reinforced Epoxy/Poly(Ether Imide) Semi-Interpenetrating Polymer Networks for Aerospace Applications. His detailed presentation impressed the committee, and he successfully passed all their questions. Well done, Matheus!
Roland was invited speaker at the 30th Users’ Meeting & Workshop of the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center and XIX International Small Angle Scattering Conference, SAS2024, in Taiwan. The next SAS will be held in 2027 in Lund Sweden!
Viney, Ases and Roland (online) recently visited Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), India to attend a workshop on battery technology for EVs and smart grid as part of an ongoing project funded by STINT, the Swedish foundation for international cooperation in research and higher education. The workshop showcased experts from academia and industry who provided critical insights on the EV ecosystem in India and in Sweden.
Valentina attended Material for Tomorrow 2024 conference that was this year dedicated to Artificial intelligence in Materials Science. She presented three posters.
Our team, including Marko, Sajjad, Valentina, Viney, and Roland, participated in the first FibRe International Conference in Gothenburg from September 10-12, 2024. We presented both posters and oral presentations, showcasing our latest research. A special congratulations to Valentina and Viney for winning 2nd and 3rd place in the Best Poster Award!
This summer offered the perfect weather for our annual cycling trip! Our large peloton cruised along the beautiful southern coast of Gothenburg, enjoying the stunning views and fresh air. Some of us even took a refreshing dip in the pleasantly warm sea. It was a fantastic day of activity and relaxation by the coast!
Roland and Marko represented our team at the 13th Mechanics of Time Dependent Materials (MTDM) conference, held in Tokyo, Japan, from July 8th to 11th, 2024. Roland delivered a plenary lecture on Advances in Rheology Coupled with Synchrotron X-ray Scattering Experiments, while Marko presented our latest research on Rheology Coupled with X-rays and Moisture.
Exciting news! The next MTDM conference will take place in Sweden in 2026. Stay tuned for more updates!

Marko was invited to give a lecture at the 19th Rheological Seminar in Portorož, Slovenia.
Our group attended the Nordic Rheological Conference in Stavanger, Norway. We had a strong presence at the event, delivering seven presentations and showcasing one poster.
This year, our group set out on our traditional winter hike a bit later than usual. As a result, we enjoyed sunny, warm weather, and the vibrant greenery was in full display.

Another educational activity in our lab, this time a hands-on short rheology workshop within the FibRe Vinnova Competence Centre.
A online PhD course on Introduction to rheology was held in our lab. Participants explored the intricate world of rheology, delving into the behavior of materials in flow and deformation.
Our team had the pleasure of being hosted by R&D Crop Protection team (Agriculture and Food) at Nouryon in Stenungsund, Sweden. This visit was a fantastic opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics and explore potential collaboration opportunities with a leading global specialty chemicals supplier.
An off-duty evening of fun, teamwork and solving real-life engineering challenges! All ready for discussing data, courses, meetings and lab teaching!
